Unit Goals

After learning the unit, students are expected to be able

·to know Thomas Chandler Haliburton as a recognized Canadian writer and his founding reputation of Canadian humor,

·to understand satire in fiction-writing,

·to understand the theme of the story,

·to enlarge English vocabulary and reinforce grammatical knowledge, and

·to improve language proficiency and critical thinking through the content of this unit.

Before You Read

1.Form groups of three or four students.Try to find information about Thomas Chandler Haliburton, and analyze how his life story has influenced his writing.Prepare a presentation of ten minutes to talk about your ideas.

2.What do you know about Canada geographically? Identify the state of Nova Scotia in map of Canada and explore some historical background concerning the state.

3.Have you ever pursued something simply to follow fashion blindly? Talk to your partner about that and discuss the possible reasons for the act in about ten minutes.
