The poor are very wonderful people.One evening we went out and we p icked up four people from the street.And one of them was in a most terr ible condition,and I told the sisters:You take care of the other three.I take care of this one who looked worse.So I did for her all that my love can do.I put her in bed,and there was such a beautiful smile on h er face.She took hold of my hand as she said just the words "thank you" and she died.I could not help but examine my conscience before her and I asked what would I say if I was in her place.And my answer was very s imple.I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself.I would have said I am hungry,that I am dying,I am cold,I am in pain,or some thing,but she gave me much more-she gave me her grateful love.And she died with a smile on her face.As did that man whom we picked up from th e drain,half eaten with worms,and we brought him to the home."I have rived like an animal in the street,but I am going to die like an angel,loved and cared for." And it was so wonderful to see the greatness of th at man who could speak like that,who could die like that without blamin g anybody,without cursing anybody,without comparing anything.Like an angel-this is the greatness of our people.And that is why we believe w hat Jesus had said:I was hungry,I was naked,I was homeless,I was unw anted,unloved,uncared for,and you did it to me.
I believe that we are not real social workers.We may be doing socia l work in the eyes of the people,but we are really contemplatives in th e heart of the world.For we are touching the body of Christ twenty-four hours And I think that in our family we don't need bombs and guns,to destroy,to bring peace,just get together,love one another,bring that peace,that joy,that strength of presence of each other in the home.An d we will be able to overcome all the evil that is in the world.
And with this prize that I have received as a Prize of Peace,I am g oing to try to make the home for many people who have no home.Because I believe that love begins at home,and if we can create a home for the po or I think that more and more love will spread.And we will be able thro ugh this understanding love to bring peace be the good news to the poor.The poor in our own family first,in our country and in the world.To be able to do this,our Sisters,our lives have to be woven with prayer.Th ey have to be woven with Christ to be able to understand,to be able to share.Because to be woven with Christ is to be able to understand,to b e able to share.Because today there is so much suffering...And When I p ick up a person from the street,hungry,I give him a plate of rice,a p iece of bread,I have satisfied.I have removed that hunger.But a perso n who is shut out,who feels unwanted,unloved,terrified,the person wh o has been thrown out from society-that poverty is so full of hurt and so unbearable...And so let us always meet each other with a smile,for t he smile is the beginning of love,and once we begin to love each other naturally we want to do something.
窮人是很了不起的。一天傍晚，外出時，我們從街上帶回四個人，其中一個生命垂危。我對一個姐妹說：“我來照顧她，你們去照顧其他三個。”我竭盡所能地幫助她，把她放到**，隻見她露出美麗的笑容，抓住我的手，說了句“謝謝您”，然後便離開了人世。看著她，我不禁捫心自問：假如是我，我會怎樣呢？答案再簡單不過了，我會讓更多人關注我，會說自己又冷又餓，奄奄一息，痛苦不堪，等等。可她贈予了我更多——那就是感激之愛，她是帶著一抹微笑離開人世的。我們在排水道找到的那個男子也是如此，當時，他的身體幾乎被蟲子吞噬，因此我們把他帶了回來。“我像動物一樣在街上活著，卻能如天使般死去——備受關愛與嗬護。”他語出驚人，我覺察到了他的偉大。沒有責怪，沒有詛咒，沒有抱怨，如同天使——我不禁感歎，我們的人民這般偉大。正因如此，我們對耶穌的聖言堅信不疑——我饑腸轆轆，赤身**，無家可歸。沒有人要我，沒有人愛我，沒有人關心我，然而你給予了我一切。
我感到，我們的社會工作還做得很不夠。也許在世人眼中，我們是社會工作者，事實上，我們隻能稱為精神世界的修行者。因為，我們每時每刻都在觸摸基督的聖體。我想，在這個大家庭裏，我們要遠離戰爭、團結一致、互助互愛、和平共處。唯有這樣，一切邪惡才會消亡。
作為和平獎的獲得者，我準備用所得獎金為那些無家可歸的人建立家園。我深信，家是愛的發源地。如果窮人在我們的幫助下，有了自己的家園，那麽愛便會廣為傳播。同時，我們將通過這種寬容博大的愛，把平安和福音帶給窮人——我們家鄉的窮人，我們國家的窮人，以及全世界的窮人。為了達到這個目的，姐妹們，我們必須日日祈禱，將自己與基督融為一體。這樣，我們才能互相體諒，分享苦難。因為與基督融為一體就意味著體諒他人，與人分享；因為今天的世界仍存在如此多的苦難經經當我把一個饑餓的人從街上帶回，施與他一盤飯、一片麵包，讓他果腹，我就很滿足了。假如一個人露宿街頭，沒有他人的關心和嗬護，驚恐憂慮，為社會所棄——這樣的貧困讓人痛徹心肺，無法忍受。因此，讓我們彼此相見時，給予微笑吧，因為微笑是愛的開端，一旦我們開始互相關愛，自然就會樂於奉獻。
