Unit Goals

After learning the unit, students are expected to be able

·to understand the importance of profession choice,

·to know Virginia Woolf and her major concerns,

·to identify the colloquial language applied in speech,

·to know various figurative speeches in writing,

·to master the useful expressions in the writings, and

·to improve language proficiency and critical thinking through the content of this unit.

Before You Read

1.Solo work: Career-planning.

In this activity, you will consider and plan your ideal future career.Try to state your career choices, and make a list of reasons, requirements (qualifications or skills) and preparations (any possible efforts such as taking courses, training programs, etc.).

2.Work out the following questions.

1)How is a career important to a person? State your views from different aspects.

2)How has women’s place in employment changed over the last two centuries? Are men and women ever equal in employment?

3)What is a conventional model for a married woman? What is a stereotyped career woman like? How do you view these two types of women?

4)Do you agree with the opinion “work to live, not live to work”? Support your views with reasons.

5)How should we choose a proper career and how can we succeed in getting it?

3.Form groups of three or four students.Try to find, on the Internet or in the library, information about Virginia Woolf and her famous works such as Mrs.Dalloway.Prepare a presentation about her life, contributions, typical writing technique “stream of consciousness”and her literary and social concerns.
