Comfort Zone

About ten years ago, I started a job working for a telemarketing agency. In one of my first classes, the trainer told a very motivating story that I would like to share with you.

She began by drawing a diagram on the chalkboard in the room where we were being trained. It was a picture of a person standing in the middle of a circle. She drew some other things inside the circle with the person.

She drew a house, a car, and other people that represented family. She also drew some dollar bills and other people to represent friends. All of these things were in the circle.

She asked us a question,“Can anyone tell me what this is?”I looked around at the other people being trained to work as telemarketers. No one was saying anything.

Finally, a man shrugged his shoulders and asked,“The world?”The trainer smiled.“That's close,”she said,“This is your comfort zone. Inside your comfort zone, you have all the things that are important to you. Your home, your family, and friends, for example.”

She pointed to the dollars,“The dollars represent your job because it's your source of income.”She continued,“People feel that inside this comfort zone that they are safe from any danger or conflict.”

She erased the person and drew him alone and outside the circle. She turned to face us,“Can anyone tell me what happens when you step out of this comfort zone?”Again, silence came over the room.

The same man eagerly said,“You're afraid.”A woman said,“You make mistakes.”The trainer smiled and nodded.“Now,”she said,“it sounds like being outside your comfort zone can be dangerous. But it's not. It's actually a good thing.”We all thought about that for a moment.

She asked another question,“When you make mistakes, what can the result be?”Another lady said,“You learn something.”

The trainer clapped her hands.“Exactly, you learn something. When you leave your comfort zone, you put yourself out in front of the world. You put yourself in situations that you aren't yet comfortable with.”

“The end result is that you have learned something that you didn't already know. You expand your knowledge to become a better person.”

She turned back to the board and drew a bigger circle that surrounded everything again.

She added more money, a bigger house, and some other nice extras.

She turned back to the class of new employees and smiled,“The moral of the story is that if you stay inside your comfort zone you will never be able to expand your horizons and learn.”

“When you step out of your comfort zone you'll make your circle bigger and challenge your mind. You'll grow to be stronger and a better person.”
